Weather Service Outlets

     Reference: ACS PA.I.C.K1 & PA.I.C.K2 & PA.I.C.K3-4, PHAK Chapter 13, AC 00-45

Outlets are serviced by several different agencies such as government, government contracts, and private agencies.  The government agencies include the FAA, NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration), and NWS (National Weather Service).  There job is to work together to provide different ways to access weather information.

  • FSS

  • HIWAS

  • TWEB

FSS (Flight Service Station)

Is the primary source for obtaining a preflight weather briefing. They are operated 24 hours a day.  To get a weather briefing call them on the phone at 1-800 WXBRIEF from anywhere in the United States and Puerto Rico.

  • 1-800 WXBRIEF (992-7433)

HIWAS (Hazardous Inflight Weather Advisory Service)

HIWAS is an automated continues broadcast that includes advisories such as:

  • AIRMETS

  • SIGMETS

  • Convective SIGMETS

  • PIREPs

 

It is available in the lower 48 states of the U.S. over selected VOR stations or NAVAIDS (navigational aids).

The VOR stations that are HIWAS capable are show on aeronautical charts with an                in the stations identifier box.

TWEB (Transcribed Weather Broadcast)

TWEBs are ONLY available in Alaska.  Just like HIWAS it is an automated continues broadcast that includes advisories. TWEBs contain more information than HIWAS, such as:

  • Surface weather observations

  • PIREPs

  • Density Altitude (DA)

  • Winds Aloft

  • En-route & Terminal forecast

  • Radar Reports and more

The VOR stations that are TWEBs capable are show on aeronautical charts with an          the stations identifier box.
