Hypoxia

     Reference: ACS PA.I.H.K4, PHAK Chapter 17

Hy​poxia simply means reduced or lack of oxygen or just not enough oxygen going to the brain.  Pilots are more at risk while flying at high altitudes. There are four types of Hypoxia: 

  • Hypoxic hypoxia

  • Hypemic hypoxia

  • Stagnant hypoxia

  • Histotoxic hypoxia

  • Hypoxic

    • Not enough oxygen to the body​

  • Hypemic

    • The blood is unable to transport enough​ oxygen to the cells in the body.

  • Stagnant 

    • Also known as "not flowing."  Oxygen-rich blood is not moving with in the lungs. ​

  • Histotoxic 

    • Cells are unable to use the oxygen.​
