About The Founder
Founder of Red Horse Aviation, David Smith, is a certified Commercial Pilot and Flight Instructor who has worked in the aviation industry for many years. He began his career on the ramp for American Airlines and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he became an aircraft mechanic. In 2015, he received his B.S. degree in Aeronautics and his Commercial Pilot certificate. He continues to work as an aircraft mechanic with the Department of Defense and has now become an FAA ground instructor.
After years of flying, David became aware of an issue with aviation training.
The issue is that the majority of flight and ground schools, including their instructors, place a strong emphasis on rote memorization and end up merely teaching just the bare minimum of information.
David does not want to run a pilot training program that only teaches students the bare minimum needed to pass the test and move on.
To address this, David started Red Horse Aviation to provide cutting-edge flight instruction. His goal is to guide students as they pursue their dreams of becoming pilots and achieving success in the industry from the outset. He is committed to ensuring that all of his students are knowledgeable and equipped with the skills necessary to be safe and confident pilots after completing his courses.

By combining David Smith's rigorous background as a Department of Defense aircraft mechanic and U.S. Air Force veteran with traditional aviation best practices, deep FAA instruction expertise, and a focus on safety, Red Horse Aviation takes a holistic, safety first approach to pilot development. We break away from the industry-wide trend of baseline rote memorization. Instead, our Part 61 curriculum dives into best flying practices, technical aircraft systems, aerodynamics, and preventative maintenance theory—ensuring our students understand why an aircraft behaves the way it does, rather than just memorizing a testing gouge.
