The four stroke operating cycle is:
Intake – Fuel/air mixture enters the cylinder.
Compression –Piston moves up compressing the Fuel/air mixture.
Power (combustion) - Fuel/air mixture combustion from the spark plug firing.
Exhaust - burnt gases exiting the cylinder.
